Platform comparison

Shopify alternatives for a research peptide store.

The six kinds of platform research stores move to after Shopify, what each one hands you to run, and how to check the catalog and plan redirects before a domain switch.

Key takeaways

  • If payment support is driving your move, check the new gateway and your provider’s eligibility rules before comparing designs.
  • There are six kinds of alternative. They differ less in features than in how much of the running they hand back to you.
  • No platform changes a card processor’s rules. A move helps when the new platform makes the store easier to review and gives you a second way to get paid.
  • The risk in any move is losing search traffic through broken links. Map every old product and collection address to its new page before switching the domain.
  • Keep the Shopify store running until the new one is tested end to end. The switch is the last step, not the first.

Why research stores leave Shopify

Shopify is an excellent general platform, and many research stores start on it for that reason. The trouble comes from two gates: the platform’s own acceptable use policy, and the payment terms that sit behind Shopify Payments. The platform terms and payment terms are separate checks, and your exact products and location matter. The guide to whether Shopify allows peptides reads both policies in detail.

That is not a verdict on any particular store, and the policies change, so read the current versions yourself. What matters here is the practical consequence: write down the specific problem you need the alternative to solve, such as catalog tools, ongoing maintenance or a supported payment integration.

The six kinds of alternative

The options fall into six groups. Within each group the products differ, but the trade is broadly the same.

Choose by payments first

Every alternative on the list still needs a card processor that will accept a research store, and each processor decides for itself. Moving platforms does not change that decision. What a platform can change is how easy the store is to review, and whether you have a second way to get paid.

So ask three questions of each option. Which card gateways does it support, and do you connect your own account? Does it support pay-by-app methods such as Zelle, Cash App and Venmo with orders held until the money is confirmed? And does it put the pages a reviewer opens, such as the age gate, research-use statement and specific policies, in place by default? The guide to peptide payment processors covers the card side.

WooCommerce can offer flexibility through payment plugins or custom integration, subject to the provider’s terms. That flexibility needs a maintenance budget: you or someone you pay keeps WordPress, the theme and every plugin updated, and builds the gate, the certificate structure and any claim review yourself. Price that work honestly before choosing it for flexibility alone.

Evaluate one concrete store, not a feature list

Use an illustrative brief with 40 products, 80 variants, four essential apps and one existing card gateway. These are example inputs, not a merchant result. List what each app actually does: a subscription, accounting export, email audience or fulfillment connection. Ask each alternative to show how it will replace that task, including what remains manual.

Choose one multi-variant product and follow it on a phone from search to its document, cart and the available checkout method. Check an unavailable variant as well. Ask for an export example and a walkthrough of an order waiting for manual payment. A polished homepage cannot show whether those operations fit your business.

Write down the deciding gaps. If subscriptions are essential, Torva currently lacks them. If a required Shopify app has no replacement, budget for development or keep the current platform while evaluating options. If the fit is strong, prepare catalog and consent records first, and keep historic orders accessible in the old system or a separate archive.

What moves, and what does not

Shopify lets you export products and customers as CSV files from the admin, and that export is the backbone of any move. Map the export fields to the new platform, then check product and variant counts, prices, stock and images. Formats differ, so an export is an input to review rather than proof of a clean transfer. Certificates usually need re-attaching to the right product and lot, because Shopify stores them as files or metafields rather than as lot records.

Transfer customer records separately and retain the source marketing-consent fields. If the destination cannot preserve a consent field, keep the original record and do not infer permission from the presence of an email address. Order history is the item most often lost: many platforms, Torva included, do not import past orders, so keep the Shopify export as your record.

On Torva, the preview reads your public store and, when you activate, copies products, photos, certificates with their lot numbers where the certificate shows them, policies, pages and discovered URLs into your Desk for review. Customers come in separately by CSV. A public scan cannot retrieve private customer records or order history. Details are in the moving guide.

Protect your search traffic

Shopify uses fixed address patterns: /products/ for products, /collections/ for categories, and /collections/…/products/ for products reached through a category. Every one of those addresses may be ranking in search or sitting in an old email. If they stop working when the domain moves, the traffic stops and nothing visibly breaks.

Build a redirect map before the switch: every old product and collection address pointing at its new page with a permanent redirect. Torva can seed redirects from discovered pages and standard Shopify patterns. Reconcile that list with your exported URLs, including custom pages, before switching the domain. Test the permanent redirects to relevant destination pages; sending every old URL to the homepage is not an adequate map. Temporary ranking changes remain possible while search engines crawl the move. Moving without losing search traffic walks through the map.

An illustrative two-week switch plan

A move goes wrong when the domain switches before the new store is tested. Keep the old store taking orders until the last step. The schedule below is a planning example; catalog size, provider setup and unresolved checks may require longer.

  1. Day 1: export products and customers from Shopify, and download every certificate you have published.
  2. Day 1: build a preview of the new store from your current site and compare it page by page.
  3. Days 2–7: fix product details, attach any missing certificates, and read every policy page.
  4. Days 8–10: place test orders on a phone with each payment method you will offer.
  5. Days 11–13: import customers with their consent state and check the redirect list.
  6. Day 14: point the domain at the new store, then test old links from search results and emails.

Where Torva fits, and where it does not

Torva OS is built only for research stores. Every plan includes a 21+ research-use gate, certificates filed by lot with the newest shown first, claim checks on product copy, and manual Zelle, Cash App and Venmo instructions for eligible accounts. Each app and bank must permit your business and catalog; displaying a payment method does not grant that permission. Cards run through your own account once the store is live on your domain. Plans are $99, $199 and $399 a month with no setup fee and no cut of sales.

It is not the right alternative for every store. Its app ecosystem is far smaller than Shopify’s, it has no subscriptions, crypto or ACH checkout, and it does not import past orders. A store that depends on those should look at a studio build or a general platform.

The quickest way to judge the fit is to see your own catalog on it. Paste your Shopify store’s address for a free preview with no card, or start a preview from scratch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Shopify alternative for a peptide store?

The one that handles payments best for your situation: a second way to get paid, your own card account, and the pages a reviewer opens in place by default. Compare a category platform, a general platform and a studio against your required integrations and maintenance budget; there is no single best fit for every catalog.

Will moving off Shopify fix a processor problem?

Not by itself. Each processor makes its own decision. Check eligibility directly with the provider and ask the destination to demonstrate the integration you need. Any second payment path has its own terms.

Will I lose search rankings if I move?

A move can cause temporary ranking fluctuations while search engines crawl and index the changed site. A tested permanent redirect map helps preserve useful links, but it cannot promise unchanged rankings.

Can I keep my domain?

Yes. The domain is yours, not Shopify’s. You point it at the new platform as the final step, after the new store is tested.
