Key takeaways
- Shopify is stronger on ecosystem, scale, point of sale and maturity; Torva OS is stronger on tooling specific to research-supply stores.
- For a research peptide store, the first question on any platform is whether its current terms and payment options allow your category.
- Compare Shopify’s plan price plus every app you would need against a Torva plan that already includes the gate, COAs and quantity pricing.
- Torva unlocks card processing only after the research-ready store is live, because processors review the real website.
- Neither platform can guarantee processor approval; describe your business accurately wherever you apply.
The short answer
Choose Shopify if your products clearly fit its current policies and you value the largest app ecosystem, point of sale and a platform proven at huge scale. Choose Torva OS if you run a research-supply or research peptide store and want the category’s compliance, documentation and payment workflows built in rather than assembled from apps.
Both are hosted platforms with themes, a visual editor and order management. The difference is focus: Shopify is built for almost any product, while Torva is built for one category and its specific risks. For a wider field, see the platform comparison.
Where Shopify is stronger
Shopify is one of the most mature commerce platforms available, and for general merchandise it is hard to beat. Be clear about what you would give up by choosing a focused platform.
- Ecosystem. Thousands of apps and themes, and a large pool of developers and agencies who know the platform.
- Scale. Proven with very large stores and heavy traffic spikes.
- Point of sale. Shopify POS for in-person selling alongside the online store.
- General merchandise. Apparel, lab equipment and accessories fit its standard tooling well.
- Maturity. Years of documentation, integrations with most marketing and accounting tools, and a large community for answers.
Where Torva is purpose-built
Torva OS includes tools a research store otherwise assembles from apps, custom code and manual checks. Torva Watch collects the resulting findings for review; it is a review tool, not a legal certification, and the merchant stays responsible for what the store says.
| Need | Torva OS | Typical Shopify approach |
|---|---|---|
| 21+ research-use gate | Built in, always on, re-confirmed before checkout | Third-party app or custom theme code |
| Product identification | Factual names preserved; policy issues flagged for review | Merchant-managed identification |
| Claim review of product copy | Claim scrubber flags healing, dosage, weight loss and drug-brand comparisons | Manual review |
| Policy pages | Policy reviewer checks shipping, returns, privacy and terms exist and are substantive | Manual review |
| COAs | Per product and per lot, with a documentation page | Metafields, files or an app |
| Pay-by-app | Zelle, Cash App, Venmo with QR, awaiting-payment state and confirmation in the Desk | Manual payment method plus your own tracking |
| Email and affiliates | Email from Growth; affiliates on Command | Apps |
| Shipping labels | Your own EasyPost account; batch and return labels | Shopify Shipping where available, or apps |
| Setup order | Setup guide unlocks cards only after the research-ready store is live | Your own sequence |
What Torva does not do
Torva is honest about its limits. It does not have Shopify’s marketplace of third-party apps, so an unusual integration may need the developer API on Growth or the full API and webhooks on Command rather than a one-click install. It does not resell postage; labels come from your own EasyPost account. It does not hold funds or underwrite merchants.
The tooling reduces manual review but does not replace it. The claim scrubber and policy reviewer flag problems for you to fix; a person on your team still reads every product page and policy before it goes live.
Platform and payment policy risk
Evaluate this before design or price. Shopify’s acceptable use policy and the Shopify Payments terms restrict categories that include drugs and pharmaceuticals, and merchants in this category report account risk on both the platform and its built-in payments. Treat that as a risk to assess, not a verdict on any specific store, and read the current versions yourself.
Using a third-party payment provider on Shopify does not remove the platform’s own policy, and every provider has its own restricted-business list. Processors commonly restrict pharmaceuticals and products marketed with health claims.
Torva is built for research-supply brands, but it does not change any processor’s rules. Cards run through your own Stripe account (Authorize.net and NMI are coming this week), and each provider decides whether to approve and keep your account. This is general information, not legal advice; check the rules in your jurisdiction and with your processor.
Comparing the real monthly cost
Compare the full bill, not the plan names. On Shopify, cost is the plan price plus the apps needed for a research store, plus payment fees. Check Shopify’s current pricing; the table uses P for the plan price and illustrative app costs, not quotes.
In this example, With these app assumptions, Shopify totals P + $300, while Torva Growth is $199 before payment fees and your own review time. Torva Core at $99 includes the gate, COAs and quantity pricing but not email campaigns or affiliates, so compare Core against Shopify with only those apps. Run your own numbers with evaluate commerce platform cost.
| Line item | Shopify | Torva OS Growth |
|---|---|---|
| Plan | P (check current pricing) | $199 |
| Research or age gate app | $10 | Included |
| COA or document app | $20 | Included |
| Quantity pricing app | $20 | Included |
| Email marketing app | $100 | Included |
| Affiliate app | $50 | Command required |
| Claim and policy review time at $50 per hour | 2 hours = $100 | Included tooling; your review time not counted |
| Illustrative total excluding payment fees | P + $300 | $199 |
Decision checklist
Answer these with your team before choosing. If most answers point to apps and manual review, a purpose-built platform is worth testing. If they point to point of sale, specific integrations or a mostly general catalog, Shopify is likely the better fit.
- Have you read Shopify’s current acceptable use policy and the restricted-business list of every payment provider you plan to use?
- Do you need point of sale, a specific app or a Shopify-only integration? If yes, that favours Shopify.
- How many apps would you install to add a gate, COAs per lot, quantity pricing, email and affiliates?
- Who reviews product copy for claims and drug brand names every time a product changes?
- Do you accept Zelle, Cash App or Venmo, and how will you confirm those payments?
- What happens to the business if the platform or payment account is paused for review?
- Can you export products, customers and orders cleanly either way?
How Torva handles a move from Shopify
On Growth and Command, the refresh design direction reads your current public site, including name, logo, products, policy text and photos, to build a preview. Customers, order history, consent records and payment credentials need an authorized export, because a public scan cannot reach them. Keep Shopify running until cutover.
Map old URLs to new ones before switching the domain; the SEO-safe move guide covers the mapping. Start with a free preview, no card needed, then subscribe when it looks right. Compare plans and read about the move process. The first subscription payment carries a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Is Torva OS a Shopify app?
No. Torva OS is a separate hosted commerce platform with its own storefront, checkout, order management, email, affiliates and shipping tools in one workspace called the Desk. You do not install it on Shopify. Moving means rebuilding your store on Torva, which the refresh direction on Growth and Command can start from your current public site.
Does switching to Torva guarantee my payments will be approved?
No. Torva does not approve or underwrite merchants; card processors do. Torva helps you have a research gate, research-use disclaimers, substantive policies and claim-free product copy live before you apply, because processors review the real site. Describe your business accurately on the application. This is general information, not legal advice; check the rules in your jurisdiction and with your processor.
When should I stay on Shopify?
Stay if your products clearly fit Shopify’s current policies, you rely on point of sale or specific apps, or you sell mostly general merchandise with a few research items. Shopify’s ecosystem and maturity are real advantages. Revisit the decision if app costs keep rising, manual compliance reviews take hours each week or your account comes under review.
Can I keep my search rankings if I move?
Usually, with planning. URLs differ between platforms, so map every old URL to its new equivalent, set up redirects and confirm how they work on the new platform before the domain switch. Keep the titles and content that already rank. Rankings can dip briefly during any move, so check indexing and traffic in the first weeks after cutover.
