What this does
What you have, what is promised to orders that have not shipped, and what is genuinely available to sell.
Before you start
Products with track inventory switched on. A variant that does not track stock is always sellable.
Steps
- Open Inventory.
- Filter by low or out to see what needs attention.
- To change a count, open the variant and record an adjustment with a reason. The reason is required, because in six months it is the only thing that explains the number.
- To count everything at once — which is what most merchants do before opening — use Stock take and enter counted figures. Torva works out each difference for you.
What happens next
Available stock is what is on hand minus what is reserved by unshipped orders. Checkout works from available, so an order already placed cannot be sold out from under.
Every adjustment is kept with its reason and who made it.
Common problems
On hand and available disagree. That gap is stock reserved by paid, unshipped orders. Ship them and it closes.
A variant sold past zero. Its oversell policy is set to continue, which allows it — that is for made-to-order or drop-shipped items. Set it to deny to refuse orders at zero.
Low stock warnings come too late. Change your store's low stock level in Settings. It is one number for the whole store.
Still stuck?
Ask Torva from inside your account. It knows everything in this article and can also see what your own store is currently doing, so it can answer for your situation rather than in general.
