GLOSSARY · LAB AND QUALITY

What is third-party testing?

Third-party testing is analysis performed by a laboratory that is independent of the manufacturer and the seller, so the results do not depend on either party’s own testing.

What it means for a research store

A manufacturer’s own quality-control report is a first-party result. When the seller or buyer sends a sample to an unaffiliated laboratory, the report is third-party. Independence matters because it removes the incentive to report favourable numbers, and because a separate laboratory may use different methods that catch different problems.

Useful third-party reports name the laboratory, carry a unique report number, identify the lot tested, list methods and results, and can be verified with the laboratory directly, sometimes through a public lookup page or QR code. Stores that publish third-party results should link each report to the matching lot and keep the original file unaltered.

Claims about testing should be as specific as the evidence. “Every lot is third-party tested” is a promise that has to be true for every lot, including the next one. “Lot 2409-A tested by [laboratory], report [number]” is verifiable. If only some lots have independent reports, say so; a customer who finds a missing report after reading a blanket claim loses more trust than one who was told the truth up front.

How Torva OS handles it

Torva OS stores each report against its product and shows it on the product and documentation pages, so a store’s public testing claim can be checked against what is actually on file.
