GLOSSARY · LAB AND QUALITY

What is a certificate of analysis (COA)?

A certificate of analysis (COA) is a document issued by a testing laboratory that reports the measured identity, purity and other test results for one specific batch or lot of a material.

What it means for a research store

A COA ties laboratory results to a single lot. It normally names the material, the lot or batch number, the laboratory, the test date, the methods used (for example HPLC for purity and mass spectrometry for identity), the specification each result is compared against, and the result itself. Many also carry a signature, a report number and a way to verify the report with the laboratory.

For a research-supply store, the COA is the main piece of evidence a buyer can examine before ordering. That makes three details matter: the COA must match the lot actually being shipped, the file must be legible on a phone, and older lots must be distinguishable from the current one. A single generic PDF reused for every lot undermines the whole point of publishing it.

A COA is evidence to review, not a guarantee. Stores should publish the original report unaltered, avoid summarising it with broader claims than it supports, and keep a register of product, lot, laboratory, report number and review status so a mismatch is caught before a customer finds it.

How Torva OS handles it

Torva OS attaches COAs and specification documents to each product and shows them on the product page and on a customer-facing documentation page. Certificates brought in by a site import keep their lot identifier. See how to build a COA page that builds trust.
