What is a high-risk merchant account?

A high-risk merchant account is a card-processing account offered to businesses whose category, chargeback history or regulatory exposure makes mainstream processors decline them or apply extra conditions.

What it means for a research store

Processors classify risk by category and by history. Categories such as nutraceuticals, research chemicals, subscriptions with free trials and travel are often treated as high risk, as are businesses with elevated chargebacks. High-risk acquirers and ISOs accept these merchants in exchange for tighter terms.

Typical terms include higher processing rates, a monthly or annual fee, a rolling reserve, stricter chargeback thresholds, longer settlement times and more detailed underwriting. Many connect through a gateway such as Authorize.net or NMI rather than an all-in-one processor.

A merchant account is a contract with a specific acquiring bank, so read it closely: reserve percentage and release schedule, termination terms, early-cancellation fees and what happens to funds if the account closes. Keep your store’s presentation consistent with what you told underwriting; a mismatch discovered in a later review is a common reason accounts are closed.

How Torva OS handles it

Torva OS supports card processing through the merchant’s own Stripe account (embedded onboarding). Authorize.net and NMI gateways, which is how many high-risk merchant accounts connect, are coming this week. Torva never holds merchant funds.
