GLOSSARY · MARKETING AND GROWTH

What is an affiliate commission?

An affiliate commission is the payment a store makes to a partner for a sale attributed to that partner’s referral link or code, usually a percentage of the order’s merchandise value.

What it means for a research store

A commission programme needs written rules: the rate, what it is calculated on (before or after discounts, shipping and tax), how long a referral lasts, what happens when both a link and a code apply, and when commission becomes payable. Paying only after the return window closes avoids paying on orders that are later refunded.

Commission states make the process auditable: pending when the order is placed, qualified when it is paid, payable after the return window and paid once the payout is sent. Reversals for refunds and chargebacks should be automatic.

Commission-only programmes, where partners earn only on sales they drive, align cost with results. Flat fees per post pay for activity whether or not it sells. Affiliates also inherit the store’s compliance obligations: their content must follow the same research-use-only rules as the store’s own.
